Airfield Asphalt Pavement Technology Program

Monte Symons
(symonmg@auburn.edu) received his Bachelors
and Masters of Science degree in Civil Engineer from the University of Illinois in 1974 and
1975, respectively. He has worked 30+ years for the Federal Highway Administration in various
pavement and materials related positions and locations throughout the United States. He was
assigned briefly to SHRP and then helped FHWA administer the Long Term Pavement
Performance (LTPP) for 9 years. Monte's last assignment with the FHWA was with the
Resource Center in Atlanta where he directed the national Pavement and Materials Technical
Service Team. At Auburn University, Mr. Symons administers the Airfield Asphalt Pavement
technology Program. This $1.6 million per year cooperative agreement program from the Federal
Aviation Administration awards 6-8 projects per year towards improving the efficiency and
effectiveness of airfield asphalt pavements. He is a registered professional engineer in
Washington.
